What is Thrombophlebitis?

Thrombophlebitis is an inflammatory reaction that affects the veins.

Causes

The most common cause of Thrombophlebitis is a condition Superficial Vein Thrombosis. This occurs when a blood clot forms in a vein close to the surface of the skin.

Symptoms

The symptoms of Thrombophlebitis may include:

•   Warmth of the skin and tissue around the vein
•   Tenderness and pain that worsens with added pressure
•   Darkening of the skin over the vein
•   Hardening of the vein

Diagnosis & Treatment

Thrombophlebitis is diagnosed by a Doctor using a physical examination. The doctor may order blood tests and scans to determine the underlying cause of the condition, as well as any complications.

The exact treatment used will depend on the underlying cause of the inflammation.
